El cuarto día de regatas amaneció soleado y con una fuerte corriente, que puso a prueba a los 71 barcos del Campeonato Mundial J/70. La clasificación general se mantiene muy ajustada, con posiciones que cambian en cada regata. Con ocho de las diez pruebas programadas ya completadas, este viernes trajo consigo un nuevo líder.
La flota se prepara para la gran final del campeonato, que se correrá mañana, sábado, en las aguas del Río de la Plata, en un evento organizado por el Yacht Club Argentino.
El Aretê (BRA), timoneado por Bruno Bethlem, se colocó al frente con 68 puntos netos, aventajando por ocho a Doug Rastello, al timón del Brutus III (GBR) de Charles Thomson.
Las condiciones del viernes fueron todo un desafío: vientos de 6 a 8 nudos combinados con una fuerte corriente pusieron a prueba a las tripulaciones que siguen peleando por el título mundial.
«El día fue bastante bueno. No fuimos demasiado agresivos en los ajustes para poder manejar las difíciles condiciones de Buenos Aires», dijo el nuevo líder de la regata. «¿Mi equipo? Todos somos amigos. Llevamos mucho tiempo navegando juntos en esta clase. Se lo merecen. Estoy feliz por ellos».
«No tenemos expectativas. Solo estamos aquí para navegar. No creemos que las expectativas sean buenas, así que no las creamos. Simplemente salimos cada día e intentamos navegar lo mejor posible».
En la séptima regata, el Rowdy (EE. UU.) de Richard Witzel forzó una trasluchada en la línea de meta para imponerse al Jcurve (ITA) de Mauro Roversi y al Elvis (SWE) de Filip Engelbert.
Tras un breve aplazamiento para reajustar la línea, la octava regata comenzó con muchos barcos navegando a babor justo después de la salida. Cuando los barcos viraron a favor del viento, un desfile de spinnakers iluminó el lado izquierdo del campo de regatas. El Casting Couch (EE. UU.) de Cate Muller-Terhune se alzó con la victoria, por delante del Bábá (POR) de Nuno Espirito Santo Silva y del Nildo (ARG) de Guillermo Parada.

2° Doug Rastello, GBR Brutus III con Charles Thompson, Ben Saxton, Chris Grube, 76 puntos
3° Peter Duncan, EE. UU. Relative Obscurity con Willem Van Waay, Jud Smith y Víctor Díaz De León, 80 puntos
4° Laura Grondin, EE. UU. Dark Energy con Taylor Canfield, Ian Liberty y Edward Hackney, 81 puntos
5° Martin Dent, GBR Jelvis, con Rick Peacock, Henry Wethrell y Ruby Dent, 87 puntos
El Ducasse Sailing Team (CHI), integrado por Andrés, Ignacio, Rodrigo y Francisco Ducasse, afrontó una jornada exigente para mantener su liderazgo en la división Corinthians, que cuenta con un total de 30 embarcaciones. Por su parte, el 707 (ARG) de Ezequiel Despontin, junto a Pablo Despontin, Sebastián Halpern y Gabriel Marino, continúa al frente en la categoría One Pro.
Participan embarcaciones de 16 países en cuatro continentes: Argentina (ARG), Australia (AUS), Bermudas (BER), Brasil (BRA), Chile (CHI), China (CHN), España (ESP), Gran Bretaña (GBR), Alemania (GER), Italia (ITA), Portugal (POR), Suiza (SUI), Suecia (SWE), Turquía (TUR), Uruguay (URU) y Estados Unidos (USA).

Shakeup Day at J/70 World Championship
It was a sunny, beautiful day on the Río de la Plata with a ripping tide that challenged the 71 boats at the J/70 World Championship. The standings continue to invert throughout this series, with eight of 10 planned races recorded.
The final shootout is set for Saturday at Yacht Club Argentino, after another new leader has materialized: Bruno Bethlem’s Aretê (BRA) with 68 net points, eight ahead of Doug Rastello helming Charles Thomson’s Brutus III (GBR).
Friday’s conditions could be referred to as a seesaw—when winds of 6-8 knots combined with significant current to test crews homing in on their 2025 World Champion.
“The day was quite good. We were not too aggressive in the settings so we could manage the tricky conditions of Buenos Aires,” said the new regatta leader. “My team? We’re all friends. We have been sailing in this Class for a long time together. They deserve this. I’m happy for them.”
“We have no expectations. We’re just here to sail. We don’t think expectations are good, so we don’t make them. We just go out there every day and try to sail our best.»
Race seven saw Richard Witzel’s Rowdy (USA) forcing a gybe at the finish line to take the win over Mauro Roversi’s Jcurve (ITA) and Filip Engelbert’s Elvis (SWE).
After a brief postponement to reset the line, race eight was off with many on port tack just after the start. As boats turned downwind, a parade of spinnakers lit up the left side of the course. Cate Muller-Terhune’s Casting Couch (USA) earned the victory, ahead of Nuno Espirito Santo Silva’s Bábá (POR) and Guillermo Parada’s Nildo (ARG).
